PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Do you have a favorite subject for your photos? Do you have an ongoing photography project that you take photos for on a regular basis?  Is photography your job, your passion or the way you document certain aspects of your life? Or do you sometimes need some inspiration to get you to pick up your camera or even your phone and take a photo?  I certainly do.

I'm a big believer in trying to think outside the box and trying something new.  When I'm at an event taking photos for the club, I'm always looking for a non-event subject to take a photo of for my personal use.  For example, I'm not much of a bird photographer, but when I'm out on a golf course and drive up beside a sandhill crane I'm going to try to take a bird photo.  Even for the event photos, I try to come up with something a little different for some of my shots just to keep it interesting to me.

Our events slow down a bit in late spring and summer so to give you some inspiration to think outside the box I'm going to be giving you some ideas and subjects in our newsletter to capture with your camera and your phone.  I hope you choose to participate in these challenges and I'd love to see your unique perspective at our upcoming photo reviews.

MONTHLY PHOTO CHALLENGE

MAY PHOTO CHALLENGE

We are starting a monthly photo challenge and the pictures will be shown in the following months' photo review. You can choose one of the topics below or be really creative and combine some or all of them into one photo.

Composition - "Rule of Thirds"

We hear about the "rules" of photography.  There are guidelines for composition that may make an image stronger, but rules were made to be broken.  So you can either photograph an example of the rule, or go way outside the box and deliberately break the rule.  In his excellent presentation last Monday Scott mentioned the "Rule of Thirds" and then showed a photograph that broke that rule so I challenge you to take a photo that follows this "Rule of Thirds" or to take one that you deliberately compose to break it.  There is a good article explaining the Top 10 rules of Composition including the "Rule of Thirds" at http://www.photographymad.com/pages/view/10-top-photography-composition-rules.

General Photography - Weather

Our April showers were missing this year so hopefully you can capture an image that shows some aspect of the weather or it's effect on your surroundings.

Macro/Close-up

In July we have a do it yourself field trip called "What Is It?"  You can see some previous examples at http://oviedophotoclub.zenfolio.com/p919364098  We take close up shots of common objects and try to stump the other members and see if they can figure out what is it.   Your shots should be out of the camera but they can be cropped to make it harder to identify the items.

Mobile (phone) Photography

The best camera is the one you have with you, but you still need to use it.  Use your phone to photograph your coffee or, for you non-coffee drinkers, any drink you enjoy.

For our members who have joined the Florida Camera Club Council (FCCC) the 2017 2nd Triannual Print Competition will accept submissions from Saturday, April 29 to Thursday, May 18, 2017.  Once you have submitted a print electronically the actual print must be delivered by Tuesday, May 23rd.  Membership in FCCC is free to our club members but there is a fee to enter the competitions plus the cost of delivering your prints for the print competition.

A webinar on Features of Creative Images that will cover different type of creative images, judging criteria for creative images and the opportunity to practice scoring creative images will be on June 3rd from 9 - 11:30am and the cost is $25.00.  There are only 25 spaces available for this webinar so don't wait to register.

Do you want a critique of an image, FCCC has set up an area to upload an image to be critiqued by a member of their judging team.  It is an open forum and any other registered member may also critique your image.  Interaction with the mentor judge is encouraged so you can reply to their critique and follow up with any questions or comments you may have.  You can also ask questions on any photography related topic there as well.  There is no cost to participate in the critiques.
